Opossum trapped in cage for raccoons

So I accidentally trapped an opossum. What should I do now…  The last thing I wanted was to wake up to and empty pond or a bunch of koi carcasses therefore, recently sighted raccoons prompted me to setup a small animal trap.

The capture of this marsupial forced me to do some quick research before deciding exactly what to do with it.  As it turns out opossums are responsible for the cleanup of dead animal carcasses that might otherwise become a health concern if left in your yard to rot.

They are not a threat to anything living in my yard or pond and while their hissing and show of teeth can appear threatening, I couldn’t find any reason not to just let him go.

As it turns out, opossums are not the smartest animals and it took quite a bit of effort to get him out of the cage.  Since they are nocturnal, perhaps this was just because he was tired, lonely and scared.  LOL
